Former Indomitable Lions of Cameroon forward Fabrice Esono Olinga has expressed his disgust about how Andre Onana Onana’s situation has been handled by officials of the country’s football in recent years.
The former Malaga forward told Cfoot Cameroon in a recent interview that the approach of management of the Manchester United FC goalie could have been different while insinuating that there is a deliberate attempt to take the shine off his former La Masia mate.
“Cameroonians should be happy to have a star of this level in our team. If we talk about our current star. And for that alone, we have to do things differently because that has always been the case in the national team,” Olinga explained.
“There are players who had privileges at a given time, it is because they deserved these privileges as our stars.
Onana was sent home during the 2022 FIFA World Cup on grounds of insubordination but he returned to international football in September last year to help Cameroon qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) only to get to Cote D’Ivoire and feature in a single game before being dropped for Fabrice Ondoa.
Though some say Onana is the reason for his own troubles via his performances, Olinga insists the man management tact in this situation has been below par.
“So we should have handled the Onana case differently, and it’s just a shame because what should have been an internal problem has become international.”
Onana and Olinga came through the Fundes Sport Academy and went on to play for the national team together.
Onana has had to deal with club and country challenges lately and always stood tall in the end.
Onana, CAF team of the 2023 goalkeeper, Onana remains an integral part of the Cameroon team preparing for future commitments with the five-time winner of the AFCON- Cameroon.
