Cameroon will once again miss the qualifiers for the Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled between July 19–21 and July 26–28, 2024. The draws for this biennial competition were conducted on June 13, with Cameroon conspicuously absent from the list of 14 participating teams.
Since their historic victory in the inaugural AFCON in 2006, Cameroon’s beach soccer team has experienced a decline. Out of the 11 tournaments organized, they have only featured in three. Notably, in the maiden edition held in South Africa in 2006, Cameroon clinched the gold medal by defeating Nigeria under the leadership of former Indomitable Lion player Joseph Antoine Bell.
However, subsequent years saw mixed results. From a first-round exit in 2007 to a second-place finish in South Africa in 2008, Cameroon’s beach soccer team faced challenges.
They did not enter the qualifiers again until 2022. In that year, despite their long absence from the competition, they lacked the experience to overcome record holders Senegal, losing both home and away matches.
Fast forward to 2024, and Cameroon remains absent from the action. The qualifiers will involve 14 nations competing in a two-legged format to determine the seven teams that will join the tournament hosts Egypt in the finals this summer.
Reigning African champions Senegal will kick off the qualifiers against Guinea, who are making their first appearance in the CAF Beach Soccer AFCON. Meanwhile, Angola, also seeking their first qualification, will face two-time bronze medalists Morocco.
Other intriguing matchups include a West African duel between Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire, as well as an East African battle between Burundi and Malawi. Seychelles, the host of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup next year, will play Mozambique.
