  • Mbelle quits following back-to-back seasons of questionable decisions about his being in the core

Potential FIFA Refereeing great Mbelle Mbelle Justus has retired from the game with immediate effect.

According to grapevine information on the table of the kick442.com team, FIFA Mbelle announced his resignation from the core a few days ago citing personal reasons.

The shock move from the 38-year-old lecturer at the Catholic University Institute of Buea Diocese (CUIB) comes less than a year after he was controversially stripped off his status as a FIFA certified referee.

Mbelle was FIFA referee for four years and ascended up the ladder to earn some of the top responsibilities every aspirant could dream of. During his time with the badge, he took charge of CAF Champions League, CAF Confederation Cup, AFCON qualifiers, other CAF and FIFA youth competitions matches in addition to domestic competitions.

The budding referee earned plaudits during his days as a FIFA referee especially for his performances in the CAF interclub competition games, pitting Akonangi of Equatorial Guinea to Zanaco of Zambia and Asante Kototo against Esperance of Tunis in 2021 as well as the 2020 output when Maniema Union of Gabon hosted SA’s Bloemfontein Celtic and Ismaily’s 3-0 win against Club Africain in Tunisia.

Though there have been varied speculations vis-a-vis his decision to quit the core, Mbelle who was fully-fit at the time of his retirement hasn’t opened up on what could have pushed him to retire from a profession others are accommodated in till their late 40s.

FIFA Mbele as he was popularly known, walked his ways to the top of the game through the Southwest Region of Cameroon. He was president of the Buea chapter of Referees Association at the time of his resignation.

He becomes the second referee from the region to quit the profession in the past three months. Akangou Micheal of the Southwest Regional championship also left in August this year though under different circumstances.

In the meantime, Mbelle will continue his career as a senior lecturer at the CUIB, though it’s unclear if he will continue with his crusade of drilling young referees be it as it was during his hail days as a match official.
