CAFCL: Giving up is not in our DNA- Coton’s Gabriel Haman vows to lift gloom ahead of Hilal clash

Cotonsport of Garoua have started the 2022/23 CAF Champions League season with consecutive defeats Mamelodi Sundowns, Al Hilal SC and Al Ahly.

Preparing for their fourth outing in the competition against Al Hilal SC in Omdurman this Tuesday coach Gabriel Haman has insisted he will be a happy man once his side start winning.

Life back in the Champions League has proved testing for the Cotonites to date but Haman is optimistic.

“Mathematically we are still in with a chance of qualification from the group. We have nine points to play for from three games. Our chances are alive,” Haman said.

“It is true it has become more complicated given how we started the group stage.

Cotonsport opened competition with 1-3 home defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns before falling short in a 2-1 contest a week later at the Roumde Adjia stadium a week later.

Last weekend’s 3-0 defeat to Al Ahly in Cairo means the side bottom in Group C has a slim chance of qualification from the group led by Mamelodi Sundowns.

“Yes it is true that our chances are slimmer but we will fight to the end because giving up is not in our DNA.”

Hilal SC enters Tuesday’s contest with knowledge of the fact that a win will temporarily put them ahead of current leaders Sundowns, eliminate Cotonsport and provide a genuine chance to qualify for the quarter-final for the first time in the past five seasons.

Cotonsport have lost their last nine games in the group stage of the CAF Champions League and their return this season after a five-year sabbatical is not going as they will have wished for.
