Colombe Sportive of Cameroon sealed a historic progression to the second round of the CAF Champions League after edging past Senegalese giants ASC Jaraaf with a slender 1-0 aggregate victory.
Following a tense goalless draw in the first leg in Yaoundé, the return fixture at the Lat Dior Stadium in Thiès carried everything on the line. Both teams displayed a cautious approach in the opening half, denying each other any real space to create chances.
The Cameroonian side, popularly known as the “Southern doves,” returned from the break with more attacking intent. Their persistence paid off at the hour mark when two substitutes combined for the breakthrough. Calistus Akoh slipped a clever pass into the path of Ghanaian striker Adam Musah, whose deflected strike nestled into the net to silence the home crowd.
Musah’s goal carried even greater significance, it was Colombe’s first-ever goal in the CAF Champions League, a moment that will forever be remembered in the club’s history.
Jaraaf, desperate to salvage their continental campaign, almost equalized through Abdoulaye Faty’s acrobatic overhead kick, but his effort flew just over the crossbar. Despite late pressure from the Senegalese champions, Colombe’s defense stood tall to protect their narrow advantage until the final whistle.
The result means Colombe eliminate ASC Jaraaf and book a place in the next round, where they will face Algeria’s MC Alger in what promises to be another stern test. Their qualification is also a boost for Cameroonian football, marking the first time since the 2022/2023 season that a club from Cameroon has advanced in the CAF Champions League.
The victory also marks a huge disappointment for Senegalese football, with both Jaraaf and Generation Foot, two of the country’s flagbearers in African club competitions, crashing out early in the preliminaries.
For Colombe, however, this triumph underlines their growing ambition on the continental stage. Head coach Richard Towa, who had emphasized the importance of discipline and sharper finishing after the first leg, will be pleased to see his side rise to the occasion when it mattered most.
With momentum now on their side, and a historic first goal in the competition already secured, the Cameroonian outfit will look to carry their dream further as they prepare for a highly anticipated clash against MC Alger.
