CAF Champions League: ‘Better’ Coton extends winless streak to 15 games

Cotonsport of Garoua suffered a 1-2 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday night to extend their losing streak in the group stage of the CAF Champions League to 13 games and their winless run to 15.

Though Jean Daniel Nyeck and mates improved from the 2-1 defeat at home, they still failed to score the long awaited point.

Coach Agbor Ernest’s team played arguably their best football, scored a late goal through substitute Moshood Kasali, yet still fell short of glory at the home of the group winners as they ended another disappointing season in the CAF Champions League.

Cotonsport’s last point from a group stage game in the competition was obtained on September 13, 2013 when they played a goalless draw against Sewe Sports of Abidjan at the Stade Robert Chaproux in Abidjan.

Since then, the 17-times Cameroon champions have gone on to lose against 13 group games in a row, stretching to beyond two seasons without a win at the business end of the competition.

Just like in 2017, Cotonsport finished bottom of the group with zero point while Mamelodi Sundowns finished top and Al Ahly on second spot will join them in the quarter-final draw.

Cotonsport playing catch up in the domestic championship race will return home and focus on their title defense with hopes of returning to the group stage of the Champions League with more of the requirements for better results.
