The group and quarter-final stages of the ongoing U17 Africa Nations Cup has come and gone and unarguably, Burkina Faso has pulled the surprised results in this competition so far, slaying heavyweights.
Holders Cameroon and Nigeria who are amongst the five most successful nations in this youth tournament with two titles each, did not get the chance of booking a World Cup ticket because they succumbed to Burkina Faso.
The baby stallions ensured the premature exit of Cameroon in the last group stage game following a 2-0 victory, to reach the last eight as runners up of group C.
Nigeria have equally been denied a chance of making her 13 participation at the FIFA World Cup scheduled for October this year in Peru, after bowing out in the quarterfinals finals via a 2-1 loss.
As it was announced, the four semi finalists of the U17 AFCON, automatically grabs the four available WC tickets as CAF’s representatives.
The baby Eaglets are the most successful Nation in the history of the U17 World Cup. They have won it a record of five times including the maiden edition(1985,1993,2007, 2013 and 2015).
They equally are the only nation to have won the title back-to-back, that is in 2013 and 2015. Only Brazil is close to level up title record with Nigeria as they are current holders with a record of four titles.
Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen remains the top scorer of the U17 World Cup with 10 goals and the country has recorded the most goals scored in the history of the tournament(26).
Equally, Cameroon has been denied the opportunity for a third World Cup participation, having made their debut in 2003 after they emerged African champions.
Burkina Faso has come a long way and still seems a threat in the competition marking its end soon. They will battle for their place in the last two against Senegal on Sunday, May 14.
Having slain these African heavyweights to pave their way to the other phases of the competition, the One time title holders(2011) looks forward to a second title after 12years and a 6th WC participation.
