Former Canon Yaounde forward, Bil Nsongo delivered the performance of his young career on Sunday, scoring twice to help Deportivo La Coruña secure promotion back to La Liga after eight years away from the Spanish top flight.

The 21-year-old striker was the hero in Deportivo’s crucial 2-0 victory away to Real Valladolid on matchday 41 of the Segunda División season.

Playing under heavy rain at the José Zorrilla Stadium, Nsongo opened the scoring in the 11th minute after capitalising on a defensive error before striking again in the 33rd minute to put Deportivo firmly on course for promotion.

The brace confirmed Deportivo’s return to Spain’s elite division for the first time since 2018, completing an emotional comeback for one of Spanish football’s historic clubs.

Spanish media described the Cameroonian forward as the “hero of the promotion” after his decisive display in the club’s biggest game in years.

Nsongo’s rise has been one of the stories of Deportivo’s season. The former Canon Yaoundé forward began the campaign with the reserve side before gradually earning the trust of coach Antonio Hidalgo through a series of impressive performances.

Since breaking into the first team, the young striker has continued to grow in confidence, contributing important goals during Deportivo’s push for promotion. According to club statistics, he has scored six goals in 20 league appearances this season.

For Cameroon football, Nsongo’s breakthrough in Spain adds another promising name to the growing list of young Indomitable Lions talents making waves across Europe.
