The Desert foxes of Algeria have reached their first ever African Nations championship final, following their impressive win over Niger at the semi-final.
25-year-old USM Alger’s forward Aymen Mahious, scored twice as Algeria dispatched the Mena of Niger 5-0 at the Miloud Hadefi stadium in Oran in Oran on Tuesday.
Algeria and Niger had come to the game as the only two sides who had not conceded a goal since the start of the competition.
The host needed just a quarter of an hour to rubbish Niger’s clean sheet record, when Ayoub Abdellaoui headed pass goalkeeper Mahamadou Djibo.
The floodgates were let loose, as in-form forward Aymen Mahious scored twice in the space of 10 minutes, to put Algeria three goals up before the 35th minute.
Niger’s captain Boureima Katkore unfortunately made things worst for his team, when he put the the ball in his own net at the stroke of half-time, to put the host four goals up before the break.
Harouna Doula’s side came back from the changed room more determined to correct the wrongs of the first segment, as they mounted pressure on the Desert foxes.
As Niger searched for a goal, they were instead caught off guard, when Soufiane Bayazid fired in the fifth goal at the 83rd minute.
Algeria then stayed solid and secured their ticket for the final. They will now face the winner of the game pitting Senegal against Madagascar.
It is the first time Algeria is reaching the final of the African Nations championship, after finishing fourth in the 2011 edition.
With his braces against, Aymen Mahious is now topping the goal scorers chart with five goals, two more than Madagascar’s Razafindranaivo Koloina.
