Algerian fans display ‘new Africa’ just after defeat against Senegal

There was a rare sight at the end of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) final last Saturday at the Nelson Mandela stadium in Baraki, Algiers.

Fans of the Desert Foxes displayed a great show of sportsmanship by offering a five minutes standing ovation to their team and the new CHAN champions Senegal.

Though a handful fans quickly left the stadium in disappointment, over 40% of the 39.471 present in the historic night stood and clapped for the two set of players.

In the past, the losing fans will heap insults at their team for choking in the last moment or boo the winners while a majority will just dash away.

However, Algerians showed the improvement of the attitude of fans on the continent and the fact that winning is not all about going away with the trophy.

Madjid Bougherra’s Desert Foxes didn’t win the tournament but in all Algeria won more fans, including the coach of Senegal who capped his emotional post-match conference with the words ‘shrukran, shrukran shrukran’ which can be translated as ‘thanks thanks thanks’.

Africa is certainly grateful and appreciative of Algeria for delivering an amazing tournament.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) will announce the next host of the CHAN in the weeks ahead.
