  • Marc Brys named a squad of mostly the players he had in June for this September AFCON 2025 qualifier matches against Namibia and Zimbabwe with the exception of Nkoudou Mbida and Frank Magri
  • The coach settled for 24 players after injury deprived him of Jean Charles Castelletto, Nicolas Ngamaleu and Faris Moumbangna
  • Cameroon will play Namibia on September 7 at home and Zimbabwe away to Kampala three days later as they seek a spot in the 35th edition of the AFCON scheduled in Morocco

The head coach of the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, Marc Brys on Friday named his final selection of 24 players for the September 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) opening qualifier matches against Namibia and Zimbabwe.

This long-awaited squad whose announcement was delayed by the ongoing feud between government and officials of the Cameroon football federation (FECAFOOT) includes well-experienced players such as Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, Andre Onana, Bryan Mbeumo, and Vincent Aboubakar.

Unfortunately for the trainer, injuries to Jean Charles Castelletto, Nicolas Ngamaleu and Faris Moumbangna has kept them out of this matches and opened doors for Georges Kevin Nkoudou Mbida and Frank Magri of Damac and Toulouse FC respectively as they return for the first time since AFCON 2023. Jules Armand Kooh, who finished the domestic championship in Cameroon as the top scorer also gets a second chance after his previous opportunity was wasted by what FECAFOOT later described as an error of identity.

Having named the squad, attention has been switched to preparations for the games whose camps open this Monday.

Preparations for these game have been marked by at an atmosphere of uncertainty and controversy which has dragged for over a month.

The a tussle between the Cameroon FA and the Ministry of Sports over who is in charge of the Indomitable Lions has made it difficult to determine the match venue till the time of this report. Government says they want the game at the country’s political capital while the Federation wants it in Garoua.

The five-time African champions will face Namibia at home on the 7th of September before travelling to confront Zimbabwe away in Uganda in their second group Group J game on September 10.
