The Bafana Bafana of South Africa, have beaten the Lone stars of Liberia 2-1, in a day four game counting for the Qualifiers for the 2023 African Nations Cup.

Zakhele Lerato Lepasa and Mihlali Samson “Mabhuti” Mayambela, were on target in either halves of the game at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville, Liberia, on Tuesday evening, with William Jebor’s effort only enough to be a consolation.

Mo Sangaré had scored a late equalizer for Liberia, as both sides played a laborious 2-2 draw in South Africa last Friday.

Just like in the first leg, it was the Bafana Bafana who drew first blood through Orlando Pirates forward Zakhele Lepasa, who fired pass goalkeeper Tommy Songo, to put the rainbow nation in front at the 19th minute.

William Jebor drew the game level with a fine finish at the 35th minute, and the lone stars ensured that both sides went back to the change room on a parity.

Hugo Broos’ men needed just 10 minutes up resumption, to retake the lead at the SKD Sports Complex, when Aris Limassol’s midfielder Mihlali Mayambela, caught goalkeeper Tommy Songo off guard.

Both Hugo Broos and Ansumana Keita made changes late on, but even the coming in of Tonia Tisdell, Mo Sangaré, Peter Wilson and Justin Salmon, could not inspire another comeback for Liberia, as South Africa won 2-1, to move up to second in Group K, with four points, behind already qualified Morocco.

South Africa will need just a point in their last group game against Morocco to secure their place for AFCON 2023 schedule for Ivory Coast, but can also go through if Morocco beats Liberia in the other game.

Liberia in bottom of the three teamed group with one point.
