Southwest’s two representatives, Kumba City and Elecsport, have endured contrasting but challenging starts to life in the 2026/27 MTN Elite Two championship, with both sides failing to claim victory on the opening weekend.

Kumba City were beaten 1-2 away by Les Astres of Douala at the Japoma Annex Stadium, leaving the Southwest outfit without a point after their first outing. The result was a difficult introduction to a season in which Kumba City will be hoping to push themselves towards the upper end of the second-tier table.

At the Centenary Stadium in Limbe, newly promoted Elecsport had to settle for a 1-1 draw against fellow newcomers Mintack FC. The encounter brought together two sides that earned promotion from the 2026 Interpoules, with neither able to secure bragging rights in their first Elite Two appearance.

Elecsport had entered the championship with plenty of optimism after winning promotion, and their preparations had included a 2-1 victory over Kumba City in a pre-season friendly. Coach Kengo Raymond’s side ultimately had to settle for a point in their competitive debut, while Mintack also began their first Elite Two campaign with a draw.

For Kumba City, the opening defeat means the response must come quickly. Elecsport, meanwhile, can take encouragement from avoiding defeat, but will know that home matches must become an important source of points if they are to establish themselves in the division.

The new Elite Two season has returned to a single-pool format, increasing the number of encounters between the participating clubs and making consistency particularly important. For the Southwest duo, the opening weekend has offered an early reminder that the road ahead will be demanding — but with a long campaign still to play, there is plenty of time to turn things around.
