Mamelodi Sundowns have suffered a shock CAF Champions League elimination after being held to a 1-1 draw by Angola’s Wiliete SC in Pretoria on Friday, October 23, ending the South African giants’ hopes of defending their continental crown. The Brazilians entered the return leg as favourites after a goalless first meeting in Angola, but failed to make home advantage count in a disappointing night at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

Sundowns made a promising start when Tashreeq Matthews opened the scoring in the 11th minute, raising hopes of a comfortable qualification. However, Wiliete remained organised and refused to be intimidated by the reigning African champions, patiently waiting for an opportunity to turn the contest in their favour.

Four minutes into the second half, Angolan forward Mabululu capitalised on a defensive mistake to beat Ronwen Williams and restore parity. With the aggregate score level at 1-1, the away goal proved decisive under the applicable away-goals rule, leaving Sundowns needing another goal to keep their title defence alive.

The South African side pushed forward in search of a breakthrough, creating opportunities through Matthews and Brayan León, but Wiliete goalkeeper Elber Delgado produced important saves to frustrate the hosts. Despite late attacking pressure, Sundowns could not find the goal they needed, allowing the Angolan outfit to celebrate a historic qualification for the Champions League group stage.

The elimination represents a major setback for Sundowns, whose consistency in African competition had made them regular contenders for continental honours. Their exit ends an 11-season run of reaching the group stage and leaves the club to refocus on domestic competitions. For Wiliete, the achievement marks a defining moment in their history, underlining the unpredictable nature of African football and delivering one of the most memorable upsets of this Champions League campaign.
