Cameroon forward Karl Toko Ekambi has described former Indomitable Lions coach Clarence Seedorf as “the worst coach” of his career, saying his spell under the Dutchman was the worst experience he has had in football.

The worst coach of my career? Clarence Seedorf. It wasn’t just that he was the worst coach; it was the worst experience of my life overall. He arrived when we had an AFCON in Egypt… honestly, he wasn’t worth it.”

The comments are particularly significant because they come from one of the most influential Cameroonian internationals of the past decade.

Toko Ekambi was part of the Cameroon squad that won the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations under Hugo Broos and went on to represent the Indomitable Lions at three consecutive AFCON tournaments in 2017, 2019 and 2021, as well as the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

He also enjoyed one of the finest tournaments of his international career at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, finishing among the competition’s leading scorers as Cameroon secured third place on home soil.

Perhaps his defining moment in the green, red and yellow came during qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Toko Ekambi scored the decisive goal in Cameroon’s crucial final group-stage victory over Côte d’Ivoire to book a place in the African playoffs, before netting the dramatic extra-time winner against Algeria in Blida to send Cameroon to the World Cup on away goals.

Given his long-standing role with the national team and his experience under multiple coaches, Toko Ekambi’s assessment of Seedorf is likely to spark renewed debate over the Dutchman’s brief reign, which ended after Cameroon’s Round of 16 exit at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
