The DR Congo U23 national team responded emphatically to their opening-day disappointment at the 2026 Maurice Revello Tournament, defeating China U23 3-0 in Aubagne on Tuesday to revive their campaign.
Having suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat against Tunisia in their previous outing, Guy Bukasa’s men entered the match determined to show a different face. The Leopards displayed greater composure and attacking intent throughout the contest but were frustrated by a disciplined Chinese side during the opening 45 minutes.
Despite enjoying a slight edge in possession and creating the better opportunities, DR Congo could not find a breakthrough before the interval. The first half ended goalless, though the Congolese suffered a setback when captain Samuel Ntanda was forced off injured shortly after the half-hour mark.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 58th minute when Honoré Bayanginisa found the back of the net to give DR Congo a deserved lead. The goal sparked the Leopards into life, and just four minutes later substitute Jordy Kuange doubled the advantage with a clinical finish in the 62nd minute.
China struggled to respond as the Congolese grew in confidence, controlling proceedings during the final stages. Their dominance was rewarded once more in the 84th minute when another substitute, Joe Balumuene, added a third goal to seal an impressive 3-0 victory.
The result marked a remarkable turnaround for DR Congo, who had lost by the same scoreline in their previous match. It also highlighted the depth of Bukasa’s squad, with two substitutes getting on the scoresheet after being introduced from the bench.
With the victory, DR Congo join China and Tunisia on three points in the group standings, setting up an intriguing battle for qualification heading into the final round of matches.
