Cameroonian forward Leonel Ateba was once again on the scoresheet as Al Shorta SC cruised to an emphatic 4-1 victory over Baghdad SC on matchday 27 of the Iraq Stars League.
Ateba’s goal helped maintain Al Shorta’s strong push for the title, with the club sitting second, just one point behind leaders Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya.
The 25-year-old is enjoying an outstanding campaign, now boasting 14 goals and 5 assists, highlighting his growing influence in Iraq.
Ateba’s journey began in Cameroon with AS Etoa Meki, where he first showcased his potential and attacking instincts at grassroots level.
He then moved to Yafoot FC, continuing his development and gaining valuable competitive experience.
Ateba’s steady rise saw him join Fortuna Mfou, a club known for nurturing young talents, where his performances began attracting wider attention.
His progress earned him a switch to Cotonsport Garoua, one of Cameroon’s most successful sides, offering him a platform to compete at a higher level and gain continental exposure.
He later featured for PWD Bamenda, adding further top-flight experience to his growing résumé.
Before his move abroad, Ateba also had a stint with Dynamo FC Douala, continuing to refine his game in the domestic championship.
His consistent club form earned him international recognition, as he was included in Cameroon’s squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
Now flourishing with Al Shorta, Ateba is proving to be one of Cameroon’s most in-form strikers abroad, with his performances playing a key role in the club’s title ambitions.
