Mary Grace Wirba has emerged victorious in the women’s category of the 2026 edition of the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope, completing the grueling Ascension du Mont Cameroun in an impressive time of 5 hours 24 minutes.
A teacher by profession and an assistant referee in Cameroon’s top-flight women’s championship, the Guinness Super League, Destiny Grace delivered a stunning performance in her first-ever win at the race, finishing ahead of more established and highly experienced athletes in the competition. Her triumph underscores both her endurance and her tactical intelligence on one of Africa’s most demanding mountain courses.
The Mount Cameroon Race of Hope, stretching between 38 and 42 kilometres depending on category, challenges athletes with extreme elevation gains of over 4,000 metres, rocky and volcanic terrain near the summit, and rapidly changing weather conditions. Starting from the Molyko Omnisport Stadium in Buea, runners must master the punishing climb before safely navigating the technical descent back to the finish line.
Destiny Grace Wirba controlled her pace expertly during the ascent and maintained composure on the treacherous downhill stretch, ultimately crossing the finish line to secure her maiden victory in a highly competitive field. Her win is a major milestone, highlighting her dual role as an elite athlete and sports official while inspiring young women across Cameroon to pursue excellence in both sports and professional careers.
By conquering the “Mountain of Greatness” in her first attempt, Destiny Grace Wirba has etched her name into the history of the 2026 race, demonstrating that talent, discipline, and determination can overcome even the most seasoned competition.
