Senegal have been forced into a late change to their squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after Ilay Camara was ruled out of the tournament.

National team head coach Pape Thiaw has moved swiftly to call up midfielder Mamadou Lamine Camara, who plays his club football with RS Berkane, as a replacement.

The 21-year-old is expected to arrive at the Lions of Teranga’s training base in Diamniadio later this evening to join the rest of the squad.

The call-up adds an intriguing subplot to Senegal’s AFCON campaign. Mamadou Lamine Camara shares not only a name but a close friendship with Lamine Camara, who is already included in Thiaw’s selection.

The pair rose through the ranks together and were key members of the Senegal side that won the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, a success that helped launch their senior international careers.

Senegal, winners of the Africa Cup of Nations in 2021, head into the 2025 tournament aiming to build on their recent pedigree at continental level, with Mamadou Lamine Camara now given the opportunity to step onto the senior stage alongside his long-time teammate.
