Team Cameroon has clinched the Gold Medal in the 2025 First Global Robotics Competition held in Panama, marking a historic milestone for the nation and a powerful statement about resilience, innovation, and the transformative potential of STEM education in Africa.

Representing the Tassah Academic Complex, the young Cameroonian innovators emerged top in their alliance with Venezuela, Mexico, and Panama — a collaboration that showcased not just technical brilliance but the power of teamwork across borders.

The triumph comes despite an arduous journey to the competition venue. The team arrived in Panama three days late after being stranded in Nigeria due to flight and visa complications. Determined not to miss the opportunity, they rerouted through Ghana and endured days of uncertainty before finally making it to Central America.

“Even when faced with notices to return home, the students refused to give up,” said one of their mentors, describing their determination as “a lesson in resilience and problem-solving that no classroom could ever teach.”

Founded in the heart of Cameroon’s socio-political crisis, the Tassah Academic Complex has become a beacon of hope and innovation. For over a decade, the institution has focused on empowering young people through science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), providing them with experiential learning opportunities and exposure to global innovation ecosystems.

Through its robotics programs, technology mentorship, and hands-on learning activities, the school has continued to push boundaries — encouraging youth to design creative solutions for real-world problems.

The gold medal win, therefore, is not just a competitive victory but a symbolic achievement for a country that has battled years of disruption.

“This victory is dedicated to all young people who have lost their lives in pursuit of a better tomorrow,” a statement from the academy read. “Our youth are made of more.”

Teachers and mentors say the success reinforces the academy’s belief that STEM education is not only about mastering academic concepts but also about building resilience, adaptability, and innovation-driven mindsets.

“STEM education teaches us to reason through problems, think critically, and stay focused even when the odds are against us,” one of the coaches explained. “We’re not afraid of failure — we’re only afraid of giving up.”

As the dust settles on this year’s First Global Robotics Competition, Cameroon’s gold-winning team returns home as an inspiration to countless young Africans — proof that with perseverance and vision, borders, bureaucracy, and even adversity can be overcome.

Their victory in Panama may have been built on robots, but it was powered by courage.
