After 36 group games, the 2023 Women All-Stars Football Competition reach the business end.

Eight teams are through to the quarter-final which will take place on Thursday.

Romania, Ireland, France, England, Cameroun, Netherlands, Brazil, and Ghana will fight for the title at Legacy Pitch, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

The annual competition is organised by the Association of Nigeria Women Football Club Coaches (ANWFCC).

President of ANWFCC, Hans Kramer spoke on the motive behind the competition.

“The main aim of the competition is to discover players who sooner or later will play in the Nigeria Women Football League and the national team. This is the 27th edition. We started in 1997 with a two-week tournament.

“Important players in Nigeria and African football played here like Ayisat Yusuf-Aromire, Vera Okolo, Cynthia Uwak, Mercy Akide, Asisat Oshoala have all played here along with others that I might have forgotten. Some coaches and scouts do come around to catch a glimpse of players. Yesterday a Premier League club came in search of two or three players.” He told www.kick442.com

Coach Nobert Onwuzurike also echoed Kramer’s views.

He said: “The purpose of this is to expose the young and upcoming players from hinterland. Every January, players come here. We want to discover and expose talents as far as the women’s football constituency is concerned in Nigeria.

“Prominent players like Ayisat Yusuf-Aromire who is playing a prominent role here, Kikelomo Ajayi, and their sets played this tournament. Ijeoma Obi also played All-Stars. Obi came from Plateau to All-Stars, Delta Queens, and became a national team player the following year.”
