As the TotalEnergies CAF CHAN 2024 PAMOJA tournament continues to unfold, a dedicated group of volunteers are working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure its success.

These unsung heroes are the backbone of the event, providing essential support in various capacities; the volunteer force for 2024 edition of the tournament for home-based players is impressive, with over 3700 individuals selected to support operations across: Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

One of these thousands of volunteers is Imadi Abeid Maulid.

Born in the Stone town of Zanzibar, Imadi Abeid Maulid is one of the volunteers behind the scenes at the ongoing TotalEnergies CHAN. Though he is physically challenged, he is fully in charge of the Press Conference room of the Amaan stadium and always delivers.

On match days, Imadi has a charged daily routine, beginning his day at 5:00AM local time and finishes late in the evening. He grabs a bite after an early shower and off he goes to the game’s venue to avoid being late due to occasional rush hours in town. He returns late in the night to have dinner before preparing for another day. Imadi is happy to go about his daily routine like other volunteers, seeing it as an opportunity to acquire self-discipline: “So far, I have learned discipline, teamwork, and how to interact with different people. I believe this will help me a lot as a person and my future career,” He told CAFonline.com.

Like Abeid Maulid, all volunteers underwent a comprehensive training led by experts from the Confédération Africaine de Football (“CAF”) and the local organizing committee, focusing on venue operations, service excellence, hospitality, and fan support.

For the 33-year-old, the experience has been nothing short of exciting: “my experience has been exciting, because I got the chance to meet many people, help them, and see happiness on their faces. It also gives me valuable experience in community service,” He added.

TotalEnergies CHAN volunteers are stationed across designated venues, assisting with a range of tasks. These include logistics and operations, where they help manage the flow of teams, officials, and fans, ensuring a smooth and welcoming experience. It is a role Maulid is very comfortable undertaking due to his love for football. “I have loved football since I was young, and I saw this opportunity as a way to learn, and represent my country.” In addition to these roles, volunteers assist with media operations, facilitating communication between teams, officials, and journalists.

With one more quarter-final game left at the Amaan stadium in Zanzibar, Abeid and colleagues are looking towards taking part in larger CAF events, like the projected 2027 PAMOJA AFCON that requires a larger workforce, using this as a dress rehearsal. “I would like to be part of the 2027 TotalEnergies AFCON. It will serve as another opportunity to learn, expand and network.” Imadi Abeid ended.

The contributions of these volunteers are invaluable, demonstrating the power of community service and teamwork. Their dedication and enthusiasm is enhancing the tournament experience, making it a memorable one for players, officials, and fans alike.

The Amaan stadium in Zanzibar city will end activities after Sudan takes on Algeria on Saturday, August 23rd. However, for all volunteers, the experience has been priceless, while waiting for the next opportunity to serve their countries and continent.

Their dedication, enthusiasm, and commitment to enhance excellence has undoubtedly made a lasting impact on the tournament and the world of African football.
