Despite the country’s league being suspended, TotalEnergies CAF Champions League giants Al Hilal Omdurman have had a huge impact on the home-based Falcons of Jediane, with the most player representations of any club.

Sudan’s team consists of 13 players from Al Hilal Omdurman, a club that boasts an impressive CAF inter-club record, with seven consecutive group stage appearances and a quarterfinal spot in the last season’s CAF Champions League.

Despite facing adversity on several fronts, Al Hilal demonstrated strength and adaptability when they joined Mauritania’s top flight and dethroned local giants Nouadhibou to be crowned honorary champions. The pack of 13 released by Al Hilal Omdurman include battle-tested players like Mohamed Abdelrahman “Youssif,” who participated in AFCON 2021 and CHAN 2022.

Under the leadership of Ghana’s Kwesi Appiah, a seasoned coach with extensive experience in African football, Sudan’s chances of success have been significantly enhanced, particularly after he recently helped the country secure its 10th participation in the 2025 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations. Appiah’s tactical acumen and leadership skills will be crucial in guiding the team through the challenging Group D.

Sudan will face formidable opponents in its group, including defending champions Senegal, Congo, and Nigeria. Despite the tough competition, Sudan has showcased its capabilities with impressive performances in recent AFCON qualifiers, including against Ghana’s Black Stars.

The Sudanese team arrived in Zanzibar on Saturday, August 2, two days before their tournament opener against Congo.

With a solid squad backed by its Al Hilal contingent and an experienced coach, Sudan has the potential to make a significant impact in the tournament and perhaps emerge as dark horses.
