The local Atlas Lions of Morocco, will not feature at the Seventh Edition of the African Nations championship scheduled to kick-off in Algeria on January 13.

The Moroccan Football Federation indicated on Thursday that they will not be able to travel to Constantine to defend their title, so far as the final authorization for the Royal Air Maroc flight, the official carrier of the Moroccan National selections, from Rabat to Constantine, has not been confirmed.

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation in December December 2022, had requested for authorization to allow a Royal Air Maroc flight from Rabat to Constantine where the team will be based in Group C.

Despite the cancellation of direct flights from Morocco to Algeria, the Moroccan authorities are insisting that the Royal Air Maroc be allowed to transport their delegation from the Moroccan capital Rabat, directly to Algerian city of Constantine, where they will be based.

The Confederation Of African Football CAF, had initially informed Morocco that an authorization in principle had been obtained. But unfortunately just 24 hours to the kick-off of the competition the Moroccan Football Federation says they “note with regret that obtaining of the final authorization of the Royal Air Maroc flight from Rabat to Constantine, has unfortunately still not been confirmed by CAF.”

The local Atlas Lions of Morocco, who have been camping at the Mohammed VI complex since January 06, will therefore not make the journey to Constantine, to defend their title. Until this Thursday, the Moroccan Football Federation had not yet make public their final list of players for the tournament.

Morocco are defending champions are winning the last edition of the competition in Cameroon last year. The two times winners were to be in search of a third consecutive title, but now their exit from the competition leaves Group G with just three teams, Sudan, Madagascar and Ghana.

CHAN 2022 kicks off in Algeria on Friday January 13, with host Algeria to take on Libya.
