Yong Sports Academy of Bamenda have defeated Elite One defending champions, Coton Sports of Garoua as the MTN Elite One championship returned after the AFCON break.
Played at the MTN Municipal arena in Mbouda, Njibero Durell scored the lone goal for Coach Ndikum Blaise’ team at the 85th minute of the match.
The goal was Njibero Durell’s first goal of the 2023/2024 football season.
Yong Sports Academy started the match the better team as they quickly came close to opening scores.
Nguimbat Junior found Hamid Hamza Mohamed who was through on goal but his shot went off target.
Fang Englebert also came close to scoring in the first half but goalkeeper Gadin Alatbatnan made the save.
Coton Sports didn’t create any scoring opportunity in the first half.
In the second half of the match, Coton Sports started the better team as they dominated possession in the opening quarter of the second half. Howey, they failed to trouble goalkeeper Yindui Amido Mohammed.
Coach Ndikum Blaise of Yong Sports Academy then brought in Mujibu Rahaman Mohammed and Tiambou Franky in the place of Acha Aristie and Nguimbat Junior.
While coach Daniel Breed of Coton brought in Patient Wassou as both teams went in search of the goal.
At the 85th minute of the match, Yong Sports Academy’s Fang Englebert from a free kick delivered a perfect cross to Njibero Durell who scored with a beautiful header to give YOSA the lead.
Minutes later, goalkeeper Yindui Amido Mohammed made a save to preserve YOSA’s lead.
The victory consolidates YOSA’s grip on the 3rd position in Group B with 20 points.
The academicians travel next to Yaounde where they will play Fauve Azur while Coton Sports of Garoua will be on standby.
