AFCON 2023: DR Congo beat Egypt on penalties to seal last eight place

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) became the latest team to qualify for the quarter final of 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after an 8-7 victory on penalties over record winners, Egypt on Sunday.

Meschack Elia got to a rebound inside the six-yard box and produced a header in the 37th minute. He managed to put the ball into the middle of the goal to give DR Congo the lead.

The Pharaohs got the chance to equalise from the penalty spot in the additional minutes of the first half and they capitalised on that. Mostafa Mohamed sent an unstoppable penalty past Lionel Mpasi-Nzau into the top right corner.

With both sides unseparated after 90 minutes, the game entered extra time.

Nine minutes into the extra time, Egypt was reduced to ten players.

Mohamed Hamdi made a bad challenge and received a second yellow card from Abongile Tom taking an early bath.

After 120 minutes of stalemate, penalties were imminent to determine the team that will face Guinea in the quarter final.

Mohamed Abdelmonem, Omar Marmoush, Omar Kamal, Mohamed Hany, Ahmed Hegazy, Mostafa Fathi, and Mahmoud Hamada scored their spot kicks for Egypt.

Mostafa Mohamed and goalkeeper, Gabaski missed for the North African side.

Samuel Moutoussamy, Grady Diangana, Silas, Aaron Tshibola, Gedeon Kalulu, Chancel Mbemba, Henoc Inonga, and Lionel Mpasi-Nzau scored their penalties for Congo with Arthur Masuaku the only player that missed for the Congolese

Goalie, Mpasi-Mzau scored the winning penalty for DRC to set up a quarter final date with Guinea.
