Legendary Guinness Super League midfielder Tantoh Melvis Ngifor has overseen her first career win as a trainer last weekend as deputy for coach Stephane Ndzana in Lekie Filles’ 3-0 win against struggling Caiman Filles of Douala on match day eight of the flagship women’s championship in Cameroon.

The 29-year-old triple Guinness Super League champion had registered as a player staff in the build up to the 2023/24 season and played both roles since the start of the campaign. Unfortunately, for the for the former FC Ebolowa and Bayelsa Queen playmaker a groin problem has forced her to a full switch to the trainer role.

One-time Cameroon international, Tantoh only made one start and four appearances in all in the opening seven games of the season. She has helped the defending champions to the second spot in the classification table in the early days of the campaign that promises a breathtaking title race.

Tantoh’s retirement from active football marks an end to a 12-year career that took her from Bamenda to Ebolowa and Nigeria before returning to Yaoundé while leaving a lasting impression.

Legendary Melvis, two-time Guinness Super League winners with Awa Filles FC and winner in her debut campaign with Lekie Filles will remain in the game, but as a mentor to younger players while improving her craft as a gaffer.

This early start to life as a trainer puts her on the rail to develop to a key contributor for club and country as it was during her playing days.

The native of the Northwest Region of Cameroon will be in the dugout on Wednesday as her club grind ashes with eternal rivals Louves Minprof in a center regional derby counting for match day nine of the Cameroon flagship women’s championship.

Former Indomitable Lionesses goalkeeper Annette Ngo Ndom, Nadia Ndeme, Augustine E Siliki, Ngono Mani who formed part of Melvis’ generation in the national team have retired and switched to the management side of the game.
