Njie Clinton to return as Rigobert Song names squad to face Burundi

In-form Sivasspor of Turkey forward, Njie Clinton Mua will make his return to a Cameroon squad for a major tournament this Tuesday.

It is the first time he will be included in the final squad since missing a penalty against Egypt in the semi-final of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), on home soil in February 2022.

The striker walked his way back into the Lions den, courtesy of a streak of brilliant displays at ambitious Sivasspor.

This Tuesday morning, Cameroon’s coach Rigobert Song will name a squad to face Burundi in the crucial AFCON 2023 qualifier game in Garoua, including Njie and 2022 FIFA World Cup outcast Andre Onana of Manchester United FC.

The reawaken speedy forward has scored once, provided one assist and a pre-assist in three starts in the Turkish top-flight championship.

Extending back to pre-season makes an even stronger justification for the return of the former Dynamo Moscow forward, as during that time, the 30-year-old scored seven goals in seven games.

This run has seen an increasing number of Cameroonians advocate for his return.
We understand Song has approved the request, pending publication of the final squad to challenge Burundi.

The return of the former Lyon, Tottenham Hotspur and Olympique Marseille forward gives him a chance to improve on his return of 10 goals in 42 caps for his country.

Njie, AFCON 2017 winner, has a fighting chance to be in the plane for a fifth AFCON tournament in Cote D’Ivoire.

Cameroon will go all out in search of qualification for AFCON 2023 on September 12 in Garoua when they host current group G runners-up Burundi.

The indomitable Lions need a result to ensure their 20th appearance at the AFCON finals.
