2024 WAFCONQ: Indomitable Lionesses pip Kenya as Mali, Tunisia and Togo score combined 21 goals

The First Round First leg of the 2024 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Qualifiers rounded up on Friday as teams continue their journey to qualify for next year’s tournament in Morocco.

2022 quarter-finalist, Cameroon had to rely on a 1-0 win against Kenya ahead of the return leg needing to improve in order to progress to the second round.

Eliane Mambolano’s ninth-minute strike sealed a 1-0 home win for the Indomitable Lionesses.

The winner of the return on aggregate will face either Gabon or Botswana in the second round.

Elsewhere, Togo thrashed Djibouti 7-0 thanks to goals from Woedikou (four goals), N’Djambara, Gnintegma, and Kayaba.

Tunisia followed suit with a 7-0 bashing of Niger Republic with Mariem Houij (brace), Yasmine Klai, Sabrine Ellouzi (hat-trick), and Hanna Hamdi on the scorers sheet.

Mali in a similar vein recorded a 7-1 whooping victory over Central African Republic as Aguicha Diarra (hat-trick), Fatoumata Diarra, Oumou Kone, and Aïssata Traoré (brace) found the back of the net.

Second-half goals from Akebi Abrougoua and Guehai Ida lifted Ivory Coast to victory against Tanzania.

Nigeria which walked over Sao Tome and Principe after the latter’s withdrawal awaits the winner of the clash between Cape Verde and Liberia in the second round.

Cape Verde won the first leg 3-0 with a brace from Ivania Moreira and a goal by Evy Pereira.

The return leg will take on September 26 in Liberia.
