Ahead of the 2023 African Games in Ghana, the Executive Chairman of the competition, Dr Kwaku Ofosu Asare has given insights on preparation for the game.

In the background of the draw for the football tournament which took place in Abidjan, Ofosu Asare said all is set for Africa’s version of the Olympics.

“As you may know, Ghana is hosting the African Games and this is the first time Ghana will be hosting the game since 1965 when it started in Congo Brazzaville,” Ofosu Asare stated.

“As a country, we have made necessary arrangements to ensure that we host the entire continent in March. It is for the athletes to come in.

“The program is such that some of the activities will be starting on the third. The real opening ceremony will be on March 8. The closing ceremony will take place on March 23.”

The games will take place from March 8 to 23, 2024.

“What we intend to do is to allow athletes to start coming in from February 27th because so many competitions will be starting on the third like tennis, handball, and badminton. Due to an appeal from the Federation to start early, we decided to start the above games.

“The games will take place in nine venues. Seven will be in Accra and two in Cape Coast.

“Athletes will be competing in 29 disciplines. 23 will be medal disciplines and six demonstration disciplines.”

Accra Sports Stadium, Borteman Sports Complex, Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium, Achimota Oval, and University of Ghana Stadium will stage the games.

Athletics, badminton, cycling, swimming, table tennis, triathlon, and wrestling will serve as Olympic Qualifiers.

Arm wrestling, basketball, beach volleyball, boxing, chess, cricket, football, handball, hockey, judo, karate, rugby, taekwondo, volleyball, and weightlifting as non Olympic Qualifiers.

E-Sports, mixed martial arts, pickleball, sambo, scrabble, speedball, and teqball are demonstration sports.
