FIBA Olympics pre-qualifying tournament: Cameroon upsets African champions Tunisia

The Basketball lions of Cameroon are on a winning streak in the FIBA Olympics pre-qualifying tournament ongoing in Lagos, Nigeria.

On Wednesday, August 16, the team defeated Africa’s reigning champions Tunisia 83-70 in day two, to advance to the semi-finals.

It was an even encounter for both side. Tunisia did their superb in containing Fabien Ateba, Cameroons top performer against Guinea, As Jordan Bayehe stepped up to the challenge. The power forward finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

Into the break, Omar Abada’s 18 points had forced Cameroon to a slight 37-39 loss, but Alfred Aboya ensured Abada got fewer touches in the third and fourth quarter.

Procured 19 points and five assists, which helped the lions get their first win over Tunisia in seven years.

A win that sees them top of group B, setting the side up for a semi-final clash with group A’s second placed team.

Tunisia on her path will be eagerly awaiting to rekindle their Olympics dream when they meet with Guinea on Friday.

DR Congo had pulled out of the competition, leaving Just Cameron Tunisia and Guinea in group B.

In group A, Senegal and Mali leads, after sending host Nigeria packing.
