The 2023 COSAFA Women’s Championship, a frontline women’s football tournament in Southern Africa kicked off on Wednesday.

Eswatini in the opening match beat Madagascar 2-1 in the opening match.

The former had to come from behind putting on a wonderful second-half display to secure the win.

Veronica Raharimalala scored the first goal of the tournament in the 28th minute to give Madagascar the lead.

Immediately after the restart, Eswatini leveled the scoreline thanks to Tenanile Ngcamphalala in the 46th minute.

With the game destined for a draw, Sikhanyiso Magagula scored the winning goal for Eswatini in the 81st minute.

Eswatini will next face Malawi on October 7 while Madagascar attempts to bounce back from its opening-day loss against South Africa on the same day.

Zambia are the defending champions of the COSAFA Women’s Championship after defeating South Africa in the final last year.
