Three Cameroonian referees have been selected to take part at the 2023 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship CHAN, in Algeria.

Cameroon’s trio of Ngwa Blaise Yuven, Menye Mpele Rodrigue and Atezambong Fomo Carine, are amongst the 40 referees and assistants selected from across the continent, to take part in the competition.

40_year_old Ngwa Blaise Yuven, is one of the of the 19 referees, to Play a central role when the competition kick-off on January 13. The Indomitable lion of the whistle, has been one of the most consistent referee across the continent. He was one of the three Cameroonians who officiated at the African Nations cup on home soil earlier this year, and took charge of the black stars penultimate group game in the world cup qualifiers, against Ethiopia.

Blaise has also been very much active in the CAF interclubs competitions, where he recently officiated Marumo Gallants one_nil win over Elgeco plus of Madagascar, Al_Akhdar’s three_zero win over plateau United, Casa Sports’ historic one_nil win over JS Kabylie and also Equatorial Guinea’s 2_0 win over Libya at the Estadio De Malabo, in June this year.

In total, Ngwa Blaise has featured in 13 international games across the continent this year, taking his numbers to 20 games, since April 03, 2021, when he officiated in Teungueth FC’s 2_1 win over Esperance of Tunis, in the CAF champions league. Before then, Blaise had featured at the 2019 U17 AFCON in Tanzania and the U20 AFCON in Mauritania.

Assistant referees

Menye Mpele Rodrigue and Atezambong Fomo Carine, will serve as assistant referees.

40_year_old Menye Mpele Rodrigue, has featured in 14 matches at the continental scene since January 2021. In most of the games, he has played alongside Ngwa Blaise as main referee. He featured in Algeria’s famous 8_0 win over Djibouti in the world cup Qualifiers, Mali’s win over Kenya and Ghana’s draw against Ethiopia.

Menye has featured in many CAF champions league and confederation cup games, and was also part of the 2021 U20 AFCON in Mauritania.

Atezambong : the lioness

38_year_old Atezambong Fomo Carine, is one of the two women assistant referees, alongside Zambia’s Diana Chikotesha. Carine is fresh from the TotalEnergies CAF women’s champions league, where she was first assistant in games pitting FAR Rabat to Mamelodi Sundowns, Determine Ladies against Simba Queens.

She played a similar role at the U20 women’s world cup, where she officiated in games Netherlands vs Brazil, Korea Republic U20, against France and Germany vs New Zealand.

She was part of the Women’s AFCON in July in Morocco, played the African Nations cup early this year alongside Ngwa Blaise in the game Senegal versus Malawi, and also the recent CAF confederations cup second preliminary round game in South Africa, pitting Marumo Gallants against Elgeco plus.

The trio have played together and know each other better and there’s a high probability that they win form a purely Cameroon refereeing trio, when the African Nations Championship gets underway in Algeria as from January 13, 2023.
