Cape Verde President José Maria Pereira Neves has suggested that veteran goalkeeper Vozinha deserves to be immortalised with a statue following his outstanding performance against Spain at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Head of State made the remark on Facebook after sharing a fan-created image depicting a statue of the 40-year-old goalkeeper.
A Cape Verdean proposed this to me, a statue! I think he deserves it!” President Neves wrote.
Vozinha was named Man of the Match after delivering a series of remarkable saves to help the Blue Sharks secure a historic 0-0 draw against Spain.
The result marked one of the most memorable moments in Cape Verde’s football history and further strengthened Vozinha’s reputation as one of the country’s greatest-ever players.
The experienced shot-stopper frustrated the Spanish attack throughout the match, producing several key saves that preserved Cape Verde’s clean sheet and earned the African side a valuable point at the tournament.

The draw against Spain added another chapter to Cape Verde’s growing presence on the international stage and highlighted the importance of experienced figures like Vozinha in the team’s historic World Cup campaign.
