Cameroon’s senior National team captains, Vincent Aboubakar and Gabriel Aboudi Onguene have been on the lips of almost everyone in their country lately following their incredible performance coming off the bench.
With an almost similar surnames Aboudi and Aboubakar have become game changers.
The Indomitable Lionesses’ team captain, Onguene, came off the bench at the 70th minute to score a brace in Cameroon’s 2-0 win over Thailand in the FIFA women’s World Cup playoffs last Saturday, creating almost a similar impact like Aboubakar at the recent FIFA World Cup.
The brace from 33-year-old kept Cameroon’s World Cup dreams alive.
She is expected to lead the team again on when they face Portugal in the last FIFA World Cup playoffs fixture.
Recall that, the introduction of Lions’ captain, Aboubakar in the game Cameroon versus Serbia during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, was a pivotal moment of the game.
Brought in the 55th minute, Aboubakar scored and provided an assist for Cameroon who came from two goals down to draw with Serbia 3-3.
Equally during the third place 2021 AFCON game on home soil pitting Cameroon to Burkina Faso, Vincent came in at the 46th minute when the lions were led by three goals to one. That game that ended in a three all tie.
A day like the 2017 AFCON final cannot be forgotten in a hurry. Vincent Aboubakar came on as a substitute to score the winning goal that earned Cameroon’s fifth AFCON title.
That day the whole nation including kids in the streets wanted to be identified as Aboubakar.
Before then, Aboubakar had played the same sub and scorer trick against Nigeria in September 2017, replacing Jean Pierre Nsame on the day of international debut.
That famous fixture at the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium was a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier that ended 1-1.
It is worth noting that, during the friendly organized in 2022 for the Indomitable Lions(professionals) versus home based, the 31-year-old was brought in the second-half. He scored twice to seal a 3-1 win.
These two captains are true leaders of the nation. They always stand up for the national flag.
