Cameroon’s U23 Indomitable Lions have been drawn against Rwanda in the second round of the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa U23 Cup of Nations, setting up a two-legged battle in November.
Rwanda secured their place in the second round in impressive fashion, defeating Sudan 4-1 on aggregate. Their convincing first-round success has earned them a meeting with Cameroon, who will now have to find a way past a side arriving with confidence.
The first leg is scheduled for November 9 in Kigali, where the Rwandans will have home advantage. Cameroon’s immediate priority will be to avoid giving their opponents a significant advantage before the decisive return match.
Eight days later, the tie will move to Yaoundé, with the second leg scheduled for November 17. Playing at home gives Cameroon an important advantage, but the U23 Lions will know that the work must begin in Kigali if they are to make the return fixture more comfortable.
The tie comes at an important stage of development for Cameroon’s young players. The U23 national team remains an important bridge between youth and senior international football, and qualification would provide another opportunity for a new generation to gain experience at continental level.
Rwanda, meanwhile, have already shown that they can score goals and handle the pressure of knockout football. Their elimination of Sudan means Cameroon cannot afford to take anything for granted when the two teams meet in Kigali.
For the U23 Indomitable Lions, the mission is straightforward: get a positive result in Rwanda, then complete the job in Yaoundé on November 17.
