Cameroon: Song survives second scare

Indomitable Lions’ coach and manager, Rigobert Song, achieved another feat on September 12, 2023 after helping Cameroon to qualify for the 34th edition of the African Cup of Nations(AFCON), scheduled to take place in Côte D’Ivoire from January to February 2024.

The man behind the “theory of danger” guided his team to score three goals against Burundi at the Stade de Roumdé Adjia in Garoua, enabling Cameroon to qualify the AFCON for the 21st time.

The latest feat adds to that achieved in March last year when he saw off Algeria I’m Blida to reach the FIFA World Cup.

Cameroon struggled in this AFCON qualifier campaign, picking up just a single point against Namibia (1-1, 1-2) in their matches in March. The result meant that a win against Burundi would be vital to his side’s presence in Côte d’Ivoire.

Song achieved this through a top-class 3-0 victory on Cameroonian soil, in the town of Garoua.

Although this was Song’s second victory in a qualifier game, it could well become his trademark.

His second major qualification 19 months after his appointment means Song will lead Cameroon to another major football tournament.

In addition to the 3-0 win over Burundi, the coach can boast of a 1-0 victory over Brazil, thanks to Vincent Aboubakar’s injury-time goal. That was on Match day 3 of Group G, which had Switzerland, Serbia and Brazil.

Thanks to these performances, Song is building a reputation as the coach behind Cameroon’s last-minute qualification for major football tournaments.
