Blaise Djounang, the Secretary General of the Cameroon football federation (FECAFOOT) has published a release, stating that the draw to produce the two pools for the 2023/24 MTN Elite One championship will be made this Thursday, September 21.
This Wednesday’s release revealed that, the draw will be conducted at the headquarters of the national football powerhouse in Tsinga, from 11AM local time.
As it has been the case since 2021, the clubs involved in the said championship are expected to be grouped into two sub pools in the coming season.
The Federation didn’t communicate on whether the clubs will be ceded or it will be an open draw process, but in the past clubs were not ceded and there were no draw regulations.
19 clubs will participate in this year’s championship. Therefore, FECAFOOT will likely group them into a Pool A of 10 clubs and the rest in Pool B.
During the draw, bookmakers will keep their eyes on Cotonsport, champions in the past three seasons and one of the busiest teams this window. Big spenders, Dynamo that have made a loud return to Elite 1 by landing some of the best players in the market and splashing over 40 millions FCFA in transfer fees will equally catch interest.
Fellow newbie, Victoria United FC will be a subject of attention, just like Colombe of Dja, 2020 champions, PWD of Bamenda and winners in 2000, Fovu of Baham. These clubs have all had a busy close season shopping.
If last season’s format is maintained, then the top two clubs in each of the pools will advance to the playoffs.
Last year’s national champion, Cotonsport accumulated maximum points from the four-club playoff to outclass the likes of Bamboutos FC, Canon Yaounde and Gazelle FA who entered the competition.
The new Elite One championship is expected to get underway on September 30, 2023 and run till June 2024.
The winners of the championship will back home an improved prize money of 50 Millions FCFA, in addition to the right to represent the country in the CAF Champions League for the 2024/25 season.
These days, the runners-up gets 30 Millions FCFA and sometimes enter the CAF Confederation Cup (if FECAFOOT decides so).
Dynamo FC of Douala and Victoria United FC of Limbe are the newbies of the championship this season while Dragon Yaounde, Renaissance, Eding Sport, YAFOOT FC of the same city plus Djiko FC of Bandjoun all got relegated at the end of last season.
