Uganda’s Teen Cranes have advanced to the third round of the 2024 Africa U-17 FIFA World Cup qualifiers following a comfortable 3-1 win over their Cameroonian counterparts to secure a 4-2 aggregate win.
Sylvia Kabane, Esther Nangenda and Agnes Nabukenya scored for the Teen Cranes as they beat Cameroon 3-1 this Friday at the Military Stadium in Yaoundé to end Cameroon’s journey to the 2024 U-17 FIFA World Cup later this year in the Dominican Republic.
Both sides entered the contest needing a win to continue their run in the qualifiers days after their 1-1 draw in the reversed fixture last week in Kampala.
The hundred of fans at the Military Stadium were treated to an entertaining start in the opening moments as the sides showed a glimpse of their attacking intentions on the day.
The U-17 Lions had the ball at the back of the Uganda net after 18 minutes but the team of officials from Egypt led by Noura Samir Ahmed chalked it off due to an offside.
The Uganda side reacted almost immediately, pouncing on a defensive blunder to score the opener through Sylvia Kabane.
Esther Nangenda made it 2-0 with a perfectly curled corner just before the water break in the first segment.
Though Uganda could have added Cameroon’s woes before the break, it remained 2-0 till the end.
Both sides made a number of substitutions at and after the interval in an attempt to impact the game more.
Fraichie Tiwa Melong Lys pulled one back for the hosts in the six minutes of additional time before Agnes Nabukenya completed the job with a beautiful free-kick that made it 3-1 for the visitors.
The 4-2 win means Uganda advances to round three of the qualifiers to either face Tanzania or Zambia that won 5-0 in their first-leg game.
The 2024 U-17 FIFA World Cup will be played in the Dominican Republic later this year and three nations will qualify from Africa as CAF representatives.
