The Confederation of African Football CAF, has paid tribute to Cameroon’s talisman and Captain, Vincent Aboubakar, for his display at the 2022 FIFA World cup in Qatar.
Vincent Aboubakar and the indomitable lions of Cameroon were butted out of the competition in the group stage, after finishing third with four points, behind group winners Brazil and second placed Switzerland.
Though Cameroon failed to reach the knockout phase, it was a mark improvement for the team lead by one time captain, Rigobert Song. It was the first time in over 20_years that Cameroon succeeded in picking a point and even winning a game at the world cup, after dismal performances in South Africa in 2010 and Brazil in 2014.
Cameroon also scored more than two goals in a single game at the world cup for the first time in the countries history. In all these, 30_year_old Al-Nassr Riyad forward, Vincent Aboubakar, played a crucial role, as he had a hand in three of Cameroon’s four goals at the competition.
Aboubakar came off the bench and scored beauty against Serbia in their second group game, before providing the assist for Choupo Moting to level scores. His beautiful header from a Ngom Mbekeli cross in the second minutes of added time against Brazil last Friday, did not only make Manchester city’s goalkeeper Ederson look more like a photographer as he watch the ball riffle the back of the net, as Cameroon became the first African team to beat Brazil at the world cup.
CAF put up a breathtaking image of Aboubakar’s goal celebration against Brazil, with a strong 22 worded message.
“𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 lobbed finish. 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 exquisite header. 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 historic result. 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 dramatic red card. Vincent Aboubakar will forever be part of FIFAWorldCup history” CAF wrote.
30_year_old Vincent Aboubakar, has enjoyed a great 2022 for club and country. He finished top scorer at the 2021 AFCON played in January this year, and now leaves the world cup after making his mark.
The former Cotonsport forward is yet to speak on his future with the Cameroon National team, but even if he’s to call time off, then he has definitely left an indelible mark in the annals of football history.
