Cameroon international Bil Nsongo celebrated his first home goal for Deportivo La Coruña in Spain’s La Liga on Friday night, but his effort was not enough to secure victory as Levante fought back to claim a 1-1 draw at the Estadio Abanca-Riazor.
The 22-year-old striker put Deportivo ahead in the 63rd minute of their Matchday 9 encounter, rewarding coach Antonio Hidalgo’s decision to keep faith in him after the international break.
The goal came following a promising attacking move involving Yeremay Hernández, whose effort was blocked before Nsongo reacted quickest to the rebound and fired home to give the hosts the lead.
Nsongo’s breakthrough appeared set to deliver a much-needed victory for Deportivo, who were looking to end a difficult run of results. However, Levante refused to surrender and increased the pressure in search of an equaliser.
Their persistence paid off in the 82nd minute when Dani Requena capitalised on a defensive and goalkeeping error to restore parity. Deportivo had a late opportunity to reclaim the lead, but failed to convert, leaving both teams to share the points.
The result extended Deportivo’s winless run to five league matches, while the Galician club remained eighth in the standings with 11 points, according to reports following the encounter.
Despite the disappointment of dropping points at home, Nsongo’s goal represents an important personal milestone as he continues to establish himself in Spanish football. The Cameroon forward, who recently scored his first senior international goal in the Indomitable Lions’ 1-0 friendly victory over Côte d’Ivoire, will hope to build on this progress in Deportivo’s upcoming fixtures.
