Celebrated Cameroonian referee Atezambong Carine Fomo has been appointed among match officials for this Saturday’s quarter-final clash between France and Uzbekistan in Surakarta.

Carine is part of a team of officials led by Mauritania’s Dahane Beida, Koffi Jonathan Ahonto of Togo while Gabon’s Pierre Ghislain Atcho is the game’s fourth official.

Tatiana Auxilliadora Guzman of Nacuragua has been picked as video assistant referee while Lahlou Benbraham from Algeria and US referee Joseph Dickerson completes the team of officials.

In one of the most surprising results of the Round of 16, Uzbekistan stunned England to set up a clash with France in the quarter-finals. Having taken the lead in the fourth minute through Amirbek Saidvov – who now has four goals to his name in the tournament – the Uzbekistan team held their composure after England struck back in the 35th minute through Manchester City’s Joel Ndala and The Three Lions pressed for a winner.

The defining moment of the match came in the 67th minute when Lazizbek Mirzaev scored a stunning free-kick to give Uzbekistan a lead that would never be relinquished.

Uzbekistan will face France in the quarters after Les Bleus survived a penalty shoot-out against Senegal to book their place in the last eight.

If France are to progress further in the competition they will rely on the skills of Monaco’s Joan Tincrès who has scored three times in this tournament, but only started as a substitute in their last 16 game.

The game will be Carine’s fourth at the tournament in Indonesia, having been involved in two group games and the eighth final earlier on in her debut U-17 FIFA World Cup competition.

Atezambong’s know-how and efficiency at work already earned her matches in the CAF Champions League, CAF Super Cup, FIFA senior and U-20 FIFA World Cup among others in the past 12 months.

Atezambong is Cameroon’s sole ambassador at the ongoing tournament and her strides go beyond just officiating football matches.

At her 12th international tournament, the native from the West Region of Cameroon is inspiring young Africans, especially girls who are yet to see opportunities where the faint-hearted only see obstacles.
