Alexandre Song weary despite Cameroon’s qualification for AFCON 2023

Former Indomitable Lions of Cameroon midfielder, Alexandre Song Billong has expressed fears about Cameroon’s readiness for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) despite the team’s emphatic 3-0 victory against Burundi on Tuesday, September 11 which secured a place in the finals.

Song, 36, who turned up as a pundit for CRTV on the match day watched contrasting first and second half displays as the five time AFCON winner overpowered the Swallows of Burundi thanks to goals from Bryan Mbeumo, Christopher Wooh and Vincent Aboubakar.

Reacting after the game Song who featured at two AFCON finals couldn’t hold back his emotions.

“With the performance of the first-half, I can say we are not ready for the AFCON. Onana has saved us this evening,” Song opined.

A vintage performance from Andre Onana saw him pull seven saves to deny the Swallows of Burundi.

The Manchester United goalkeeper stood between Burundi and the opener in the first segment, as he denied Ntibazonkiza Saidi and Jordi Liongola particularly on repeated occasions to keep it goalless before Mbeumo fired Cameroon ahead in the 46th minute.

Though Wooh added the second at the hour mark and Aboubakar got the third in added time, Onana was called to action on a number of occasions again and he responded.

Alex Song’s call for improvement a few weeks before January’s tournament in Côte D’Ivoire can be considered a genuine concern especially given how Cameroon squeezed through to the finals.
