The Bafana Bafana of South Africa, have played a 2-2 draw with Liberia, in a Group K qualifiers game for the 2023 African Nations cup (AFCON).

Lyle Foster scored twice at the Orlando Stadium in South Africa on Friday evening, but it was not enough for Hugo Broos’ men, who were pecked back by a late goal from Mo Sangaré.

Both the Bafana Bafana and the Liberia’s Lone Stars came into Friday’s contest haven lost their previous games to group leaders, Morocco.

South Africa’s starting XI vs Liberia

22-year-old Burnley forward Lyle Brent Foster, gave the host the lead from the penalty spot at the 11th minute, after Al Ahly’s Percy Tau was fouled inside Liberia’s area.

Foster grabbed his second of the game at the 22nd minute, when he finished off a beautiful move beyond goalkeeper Tommy Songo.

South Africa dominated proceedings in the rest of the first segment, but could only take a two goals lead for the break.

Coach Ansumana Keita of Liberia, introduced Mo Sangaré in the place of Nohan Kenneh before the restart.

Percy Tau thought he had extended the lead for the home side just few minutes into the second half, but his efforts were chalked off for offside.

The lone stars waited till the 68th minute to make their efforts count, as Tonia Tisdell, who had just came in for Leonard Tisdell, fired past goalkeeper and Skipper, Williams Ronwen, to pull one back for Liberia.

Broos effected a series of substitutions, with Bongokuhle Hlongwane, Themba Zwane, and Lyle Foster, ceding their places to Kenneth Saleng, Sphephelo Sithole and Cassius Mailula respectively.

Liberia enjoyed much of the ball possession in the last quarter of the game, and it paid off when Mo Sangaré slotted the equaliser in the first minute of added time, to snatch a point away from Orlando city.

With a 2-2 tie at full-time, it means both South Africa and Liberia have now picked up their first point of the qualifiers, and are five points adrift of group leaders Morocco, who are exempted from this round of games.
