FC Lugano striker, Mohamed El Amine Amoura scored all two goals that earned already qualified Algeria a 2-1 win over Uganda, in day five of the 2023 African Cup of Nations(AFCON) qualifiers clash at the Japoma Stadium Douala-Cameroon.

Riyad Mahrez came off the bench to deliver an assist that brought in the second goal in this encounter.

Ugandan striker who plays for MSK Vyskow in Czech equally came in the second half to score the consolatory goal two minutes to the end of regular time.

Uganda almost took the lead at the 31st minute when Rogers Kasim made a beautiful attempt at goal but was blocked by teammate Faruku Miya upon trying to do the finishing.

In Algeria’s 18m box on two occasions, Milton Karisa failed to covert goal opportunities that could but the Cranes ahead of already qualified Algeria.

Goalkeeper Salim’s poor spot kick caused them a goal after it went straight to the waiting legs of Algerian midfielder, who smartly tried a long shot stopped by Salim. Unfortunately for the cranes, Mohammed El Amine scored the re-bounce since Salim didn’t get a grib of the ball.

The 42’ goal earned the visitors the lead before the break, a deserved advantage, having dominated the first segment.
Coach Milutin Sredojevic brought in Aziz Fahad and Richard Basangwa hoping to strengthen his attack line, yet the goals failed to come in.

One minute after the entery of team captain and Treble winner with English Premier league Manchester City, Riyad Mahrez, Houssem Eddine and Islam Slimani, El Amine doubled the lead from a Mahrez assist.

Uganda’s Rogers Kassim missed two glearing chances to give the team some hope but then ended up squandering them on each occasion, just like captain Emmanuel Arnold forced the coach take a take a sip to calm down after missing an opportunity right before absent goalkeeper Anthony Louis.

Aziz Fahad pulled one bad at the 88’ minute, a beautiful strike that got the Algerian backline agog since they didn’t see that coming.

However, Algeria carried the day and Uganda’s difficult start to their qualification campaign is what weighed the team down, plus going against an already qualified team who has got nothing to lose.

Algeria booked their ticket to Ivory Coast for the finals of the tournament after a 1-0 win over bottom place Niger.

Ranked 89th on FIFA’s table, 55 places behind Algeria, Uganda had a slim chance against the desert Foxes, one of the heavyweight as far as this competition is concerned and 2019 champions.

All hope is not lost yet for Uganda who has Niger to face in the last game, though the Tanzania has an upper edge against them following a 1-0
win over Niger in their own day five encounter to move up to the second position with 7 points.

Should Uganda who seat 3rd with five points beat Niger, they stand a chance to make it to Code D’Ivoire only if Tanzania loses to Algeria.
