The head coach of Nigeria’s senior men’s national team, Jose Peseiro is looking at victory for his team over their counterpart from Cameroon.

The second-placed teams from Groups A and C will settle scores at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium, Abidjan on Saturday for a place in the quarter-final.

Still unbeaten after three games, the Super Eagles have scored three goals and conceded one.

Peseiro expected similar tactics to be adopted to qualify for the quarters.

“Tomorrow’s game is a star match for us. The two teams I think both have eight African titles combined,” Peseiro told journalists during the pre-match press conference in Abidjan on Friday.

“It is a historic match against a big Cameroon team. We want to beat Cameroon by not conceding goals and scoring at least one goal. To achieve that we must play with the same enthusiasm, demand, and focus.”

Playing against a physical side that has scored five goals through set pieces and crosses, Peseiro’s men have their work cut out.

“The two teams have eight titles.” He continued. “Our goal and objective is to win the match. We know the power and quality of the opponents.

“We have a defensive plan for the game because this is a short tournament. As we want to be defensive we also want to play offensive games. We want to enjoy the game and create more opportunities.

“I don’t want to concede goals but to score at least a goal. If we do this, then we will beat Cameroon.

“We watched Cameroon games and showed the players the videos. With this, we are concentrated on the game. We will try to improve our defensive strategy.”

After a loss on penalties to the Indomitable Lions in the final of the 2000 AFCON in Lagos, Nigeria has gone on to win the last two games in the tournament in 2004 and 2019.

Peseiro’s side will hope to continue this trend of form against Rigobert Song’s side.
