Ryan Isaac Mendes has boosted Cape Verde’s chances of qualifying for the 34th edition of the African Cup of Nations after a 1-0 away win over Eswantini in day four of the qualifiers at the Mbombela Stadium in South Africa.
After struggling at home break down Eswatini’s wall last week, the Blue Sharks are walked away with all three points this Tuesday.
The Blue sharks dominated possession in the first segment but failed to score.
Mendes broke the deadlock at the 56th minute as he put Cape Verde ahead and they protected the lead till the end.
This victory takes Cape Verde to the second position with seven points, five points away from third place Eswantini and two points below leaders.
The Blue Sharks have made only three appearances in the tournament, the last of which was in 2021 in Cameroon and will be hoping to make a fourth appearance at this 34th edition.
They stand a very high chance of qualifying from this group either as first or second, though the positions will be determined after they play group leaders Burkina Faso in their remaining matches.
Eswantini on the other hand, are looking to make their debut, having being paired in group B alongside regulars in the competition, as they are the lone dreamers. This dream now seems almost impossible.
