Equatorial Guinea international Jesús Owono has reportedly deactivated his Instagram account following a wave of insults and online abuse after his collision with Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel, who died on Tuesday morning, November 3.

The FC Andorra goalkeeper has been at the centre of an overwhelming tragedy since Monday night’s Spanish second-division encounter against CD Tenerife, which ended in devastating circumstances.

Owono collided with De Miguel while rushing out of his goal to challenge for a ball during stoppage time. The impact left the Tenerife forward unconscious and requiring immediate medical attention. He was subsequently rushed to hospital after suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest.

Despite initial medical intervention, De Miguel’s condition deteriorated overnight. Tenerife confirmed his death at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, aged 30, leaving Spanish football and the wider football community in mourning.

The aftermath has also been extremely difficult for Owono. According to reports by Spanish newspapers AS and La Vanguardia, the 25-year-old goalkeeper was visibly distressed after the incident, with accounts describing him crying and praying in the Andorra dressing room.

He reportedly faced chants of “assassin” from sections of the Tenerife supporters as he left the pitch. The situation escalated online, where he received a barrage of insults and abusive messages, prompting him to close his Instagram account.

However, beyond the online reaction, reports suggest that Owono’s immediate priority was to reach out to De Miguel’s family personally. According to information reported by AS and La Vanguardia, the Equatorial Guinea international wanted to contact the family privately to express his condolences, apologise and offer his support before making any public statement.

That intention was reportedly formed before news of De Miguel’s death emerged. The tragic developments have since changed the circumstances entirely.

FC Andorra have also expressed their grief, sending condolences to De Miguel’s family, teammates, friends and Tenerife. The club’s majority shareholder, Gerard Piqué, equally paid tribute to the deceased striker.

For Owono, the incident represents a deeply distressing chapter in his career. The goalkeeper was sent off following the collision, but the sporting sanction should not be confused with a determination of criminal responsibility.

As investigations and further assessments of the incident continue, the focus remains on supporting De Miguel’s grieving family while allowing the full circumstances to be established.

A football match has ended in an unimaginable loss, leaving two dressing rooms, two clubs and countless football followers struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.
