David Akono Mendo has completed a two-year move to Canon Sportif de Yaoundé, with the 21-year-old striker immediately joining the Cameroon U23 national team camp.
Akono Mendo arrives at the Kpa-Kum from Atlantic de Kribi after an impressive spell in domestic football. His move to one of Cameroon’s most historic clubs comes at an important stage of his development as he looks to establish himself at the top level of the national game.
The young forward has now gone straight from completing his club move into the Indomitable Lions U23 camp, which is preparing for the upcoming confrontation against Senegal in the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa U23 Cup of Nations in Egypt.
The U23 camp, led by coach Guy Feutchine, began on September 27 and is scheduled to run until October 8 as Cameroon steps up preparations for the crucial qualification campaign.
Akono Mendo will also reunite with a familiar face in the U23 camp, Gangli Ratenci, his former teammate at AS Futuro. The reunion gives the young striker an opportunity to link up again with a player he already knows well as they compete for places in Feutchine’s squad.
Before his move to Atlantic de Kribi and subsequently Canon Yaoundé, Akono passed through ISOHSA and AS Futuro, gaining experience in Cameroon’s competitive domestic football environment.
He also featured as a striker for Back Council FC during the Tiko The Best Interquarters tournament, where he further showcased his attacking qualities.
Now, after signing a two-year contract with Canon Yaoundé, Akono has immediately received another important opportunity with the national team.
The 21-year-old will be hoping to make the most of his time with the U23 Lions and convince coach Feutchine that he can play a role in Cameroon’s pursuit of qualification for the 2027 U23 AFCON.
For Akono Mendo, it is a significant week — a new two-year chapter with Canon Yaoundé and, almost immediately, a chance to represent Cameroon at U23 level.
