Zambia international Patson Daka has been dealt an injury setback after returning from international duty with a muscle problem that is expected to keep him out for several weeks.

Hamburger SV confirmed that MRI scans carried out after his return to Germany revealed a torn muscle fibre in Daka’s left thigh.

The striker picked up the injury while representing Zambia and was forced off during the Chipolopolo’s 3-1 defeat to Algeria in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

Daka had been part of Hamburg’s plans since arriving at the club from Leicester City, featuring in the club’s competitive matches this season. His latest setback, however, means he will now spend the coming weeks on the sidelines as he begins his recovery.

The 27-year-old is expected to miss Hamburg’s Bundesliga trip to Hoffenheim on October 10 and the home fixture against VfB Stuttgart on October 17.

He is also likely to sit out the away match against SC Paderborn on October 24, while the DFB-Pokal clash against Eintracht Frankfurt on October 27 could also come too early for the Zambia forward.

The exact length of Daka’s absence will depend on how he responds to treatment and rehabilitation, with Hamburg yet to give a definitive return date.

The injury is another frustrating moment for Daka, who will now have to watch from the sidelines as Hamburg navigate a busy period of the season.

For Zambia, his absence is equally significant as the Chipolopolo continue their preparations for their next international commitments.

Daka’s immediate focus will now be on getting back to full fitness and returning to the pitch without taking unnecessary risks.
